Our Story
House of Compassion was founded in 1988 by a group of Torontonians who believed that people living with serious mental illness deserved more than temporary shelter or institutional care—they deserved a home.
Our founders created a place where stability, compassion, and dignity would come first.
House of Compassion provides permanent supportive housing and compassionate care to adults living with severe and persistent mental illness.
Our mission is to create a stable, nurturing home where residents can rebuild their lives, maintain their independence, and experience dignity, belonging, and hope.
A community where people living with serious mental illness are supported, respected, and able to live full and meaningful lives.
Dignity – Every person deserves respect and compassion.
Stability – A permanent home is the foundation for recovery and wellbeing.
Community – Healing happens in connection with others.
Hope – With the right support, lives can change
